PD is Different

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) gives you more options than In-center Hemodialysis (ICHD) 

With Peritoneal Dialysis, you're not confined to a chair in a dialysis center for hours at a time. You have a say in where and when you want to dialyze. And since you're dialyzing throughout the day for shorter periods, (or even overnight), waste is removed more frequently so you are likely to feel better. Plus, you have more free time to do the things you want to do, like working or volunteering, gardening or golfing, traveling or taking care of grandchildren—just living your life as you like.


You set the schedule you want

Since Peritoneal Dialysis is usually done at home, you don’t have to leave the house or plan your week around scheduled trips to the in-center dialysis facility. You’re in control. There are no needles and no blood is removed during dialysis. And, you have the freedom and flexibility you need to schedule your life the way you want. In addition, since PD is continuously dialyzing and works more like natural kidneys, you may find you have more energy and may even feel better. 

Is PD right for you?

Several conditions may prevent your doctor from prescribing PD, including previous abdominal surgeries or the presence of intestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. Risks of PD include peritonitis or exit-site infections. Glucose found in the PD solution may lead to high blood sugar in patients with diabetes. Every patient is different, so it is important to talk to your doctor, nurse or social worker to determine if there are other reasons why PD may not be right for you.

  I think there's more flexibility with the home therapy. Even though it's done more often than in the center, the time is more up to you. You don't necessarily have to follow a rigid schedule, like you might at an in-center place. I think the ability to travel and to work, things like that are probably better facilitated with the home therapy.
